100 Word Rant: Gun Control

Paige Swanda, 11

As an American, it has always been be our right to bare firearms. However, I think guns are too easily obtainable. The current background checks that people undergo to get firearms are insufficient. Guns are being used to kill others as a way of asserting dominance. Since 2015, gun violence is more common that being in a car accident. The amount of shootings per year has skyrocketed. Gun permits/training should be renewed as often as your driver’s license. The CDC must be unshackled and study this issue deeper. We must start with the people and then work on law.

Everybody should have to go through an extensive mental health check. The law states people go through a mental health check, but it’s for short-barrels, silencers or machine-guns. Without this check, you can still get a different type. There’s too much gun violence today, even places closer to home. That’s ridiculous, people shouldn’t be losing their lives because psychos can get guns whenever they want. Some laws are based on social and racial stereotype. I don’t believe that’s fair. Not all immigrants are unstable people, unlike people in our own country. Laws need to be tightened to prevent unnecessary violence.

I believe that the system of gun control that we have now is fine. No matter if we put stricter laws out on these issue or not people are still going to get their hands on them if they really want. I think that it’s our rights as Americans to be able to purchase said weapons without them interrogating us. I think that there should be a simple background check on the person’s buying these weapons but nothing more than that. Gun violence is going to happen either way so I think the system is fine the way it is.
