Salute To Veteran’s Day

Salute+To+Veterans+Day

Veterans day commemorates all veterans, or people who were active members in the military and are no longer serving. November 11th, 1918, is when World War I ended, known as Armistice day, and then renamed to what we know it as today. Every year, Spring Hill High School holds an assembly to celebrate our freedom in honor of those who gave their service. The assembly was held on November 10th, and started with the pledge of allegiance, followed by the national anthem sang by the Magicals. This year, former SHHS SRO, RuthAnn Fisher gave her story. On May 3 1995, at the age of 19, she raised her right hand and swore to protect the Constitution of the United States of America. “It was one of the best days of my life, and the scariest” said Fisher. She continued speaking about her deployment to Afghanistan, and her total of 11 years in the Air Force. She retired to the Missouri Air National Guard, and then our very own SRO. After she left Spring Hill, she continued on as a detective. There were several veterans present during the assembly, many of which served in different branches and during different times. It’s an incredible feeling to know that you’re surrounded by those who protected us, who fought for us, who bled for us. They went into the military knowing that they’d be risking their lives for people they knew they’d never meet. As of October, there are approximately 18.8 million veterans in the United States. Let us remember them, praise them and thank them for their service. To conclude her speech, Fisher said “I met some amazing people, made great friends, and was mentored by the best. Veteran’s day is a day to give thanks to those who served before me, who served with me, and who will come after me. For those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms.”
