What If: SHHS Teachers were Allowed to Conceal and Carry

Every parent’s biggest fear when sending their child to school, is school shootings. There having been way too many school shootings since the beginning of 2018. Students, teachers, and parents alike are starting to wonder exactly how to prevent school shootings. This is especially terrifying knowing most all school shooters are just another student.

Here at SHHS we have an active shooter drill known as ALICE. While we don’t practice this drill with students involved, and I am thankful for that, I feel as though if we had practice drills with the students then the potential school shooter would know exactly how to out work the system and get in more kills. Recently, government officials have proposed to arm teachers in order to protect students. While I personally believe this could work, I also see dangers in it and while everybody is screaming “Arm teachers!” all I can think is “Pay teachers!” If we are expecting teachers to arm themselves and do police work we should also be able to up their pay and give them closer to what they deserve. Another negative when it comes to arming teachers is that, although the armed teachers would go through vetting and training, if an unable teacher becomes aware of the conceal and carry, the gun could end up in the wrong hands. While I think there are lots of cons to even vetted teachers receiving guns, I can see little to no cons in giving head staff the OPTION to conceal and carry. For example, Mr. Shea is almost always in the lunch room, if he were to be armed he could watch the lunch room. Also, the people in the office could be armed in order to protect us from any intruders breaking in through the front. While I am not sure if any of this would work out in the end, I do believe something should be done in order to prevent and lessen the amount of mass shootings whether it be gun control or arming teachers.
