Adoptive Grandparents

Almost everyone in the school has at least heard of the volunteer class at Spring Hill High School, but how many people really know what the volunteer class does? Everyday during seventh hour, the members of the volunteer class go out into the community and volunteer. One unique thing that the class members do is on Wednesdays, they go to their adoptive grandparents house, which is people in the community who are elderly that do not have family or friends in the community for them.

The volunteer class is divided into groups of two or three and are assigned to different adopted grandparents that they go to for the whole school year. While there, the students do activities and visit with their adoptive grandparents.

“I enjoy [my adoptive grandparent, Barbara Finley’s] story times because when we get there she usually tells us a story from her past and they are always interesting.” Rivanold Tegomo, 12.

Throughout the year the students get to grow close with their adoptive grandparents and get to change the live of an elderly person.

“You can tell that [Barbara Finley, adopted grandmother] really enjoys us coming. [I like visiting with Barbara] because I get someone who has a different perspective and I also get another grandma figure, [she’s] someone that I can look up to,” said Kathleen Krull, 12.

While the volunteer class does many thing for the Spring Hill community, the adoptive grandparent program offers the most personal relationship and turns strangers into family.
