March Madness

As the brackets get put away and the sound of dribbling gets more and more faint, sports fans transition into the month of April leaving behind an exciting month of 31 college basketball games more commonly known as March Madness.

The NCAA men’s basketball championship game was played Monday night in San Antonio, Texas. Number three seed Michigan went up against number one seed Villanova for the final game of the tournament. Villanova was seen as the favorite to win due to their higher rank, their victories in recent tournaments and their large victory over Kansas in the Final Four. The majority of March Madness fans had no doubt Villanova was the dominate team.

“[I thought] Villanova [would win]. I mean, they were the most consistently good team. [Other teams] are good, but they don’t have anyone going to the NBA and Villanova does, and their coach is good,” said Nick Barnum, 10.

The Villanova Wildcats, coached by Jay Wright, clenched the title with a 79-62 win over The Michigan Wolverines, coached by John Beilein. Villanova was leading for virtually the whole game, with the largest lead of 20 points. This is Villanova’s third national title, with the last two in a span of three years.

“[I thought] Villanova would win because they’re the better team [compared to Michigan],” said Skyler Navratil, 10.

Villanova player, Donte DiVincenzo, won most outstanding player of the night, scoring a grand total of 31 points making an average of 66 percent of his shots. He was originally not a part of the starting lineup of five players at the beginning of the tournament.
