Every couple of years there is a new fad among teenagers. Not too long ago it was cigarettes, which had their hold on the minds of the younger generation all over the world.

The uprise in addiction caused a demand for anti smoking ads, and their effectiveness has allowed the smoking percentage of juniors in high school to drop from 18% to 3% over the past 23 years, according to U.S Department of Health and Human Services. With teenage smoking at an all time low, there was a call for a new destructive fad, and vaping filled that position. However, there is a serious confusion about whether vaping is safe or not.

According to Tim Shea, assistant principal, “For a JUUL, the little liquid pack has a pack of cigarettes worth of nicotine in them. No matter what kids say or do, every E cigarette they use ‘Oh it’s just watermelon.’ No, every one of them is laced with nicotine and other chemicals.”

The student body also seemed to agree with this thought process in a recent poll. 52.5% of students said vaping is dumb. However, 40.4% polled that they just didn’t care, proving that it’s popularity, and therefore acceptance, in society is also on the rise. Ranking in at 7.1% was the small group of students saying the activity was fine. With vaping on the rise, having a well-educated student body is the first step to getting rid of this unhealthy addiction.
