With one of the most unexpected turnouts in history, Midterm elections took place on Tuesday, Nov. 6th. Starting off, this election caught almost the same amount of attention as the presidential election in 2016. Democrats and Republicans nationwide fought over control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“Republicans moved toward expanding their control of the Senate as Democrats took power in the House, with incomplete election results pointing toward a reaffirmation of a deeply divided nation,” (New York Times).

Some even fear that this election has caused the start of a cold, civil war. Ever since the primary election in 2016, America has become divided racially, educationally, by gender, and by region. There is a prominent amount of social tension within the country that has made it difficult to agree on anything.

“President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, the most racially divisive in modern history, escalated this into a kind of cold civil war… more racially conservative part of the country would not accept social change without a fight. The midterm elections have revealed that this fight is here to stay, for at least as long as Trump is in the White House. We are locked in a kind of cold civil war,” (Vox).

Despite the atmospheric changes in our government, not every result from the midterm elections were negative. For the first time in a while, The Democratic party had some surprising successes. They turned the House blue, elected a handful females and members of the LGBT to varying positions, and elected the first Muslim and Native American women to Congress.

“The 2018 midterm elections were historic in a number of ways: extremely high voter turnout for a midterm election, as well as a record number of women running for Congress. The 116th Congress will also be significantly more diverse than its predecessor,” (CBS News).
However, no matter which party won what, the midterm elections went to show that the power is truly within the people. Because of this, November 6th will be a day that will go down in the history textbooks.
