After watching an old movie, listening to aged music, or even lending an ear to a grandparents memory from when they were younger, you probably can’t help but think; was I born in the wrong generation? Sometimes, it’s hard not to think that. Everything has changed so much from even twenty years ago, which in hindsight doesn’t seem that long. Fashion trends, music, technology advancements, social changes; the list could go on forever. Some of these changes could be for the better.
The “Millennial” and “Gen Z” generations have caused the most change in this world. We were brought up in a world where controversy still exists, which I think allows everyone to come together to do good things. Our generations, more than any other, are more accepting of the fact that people are different. They have different religions, skin colors, styles, and most importantly, sexual preferences. We see the difference. Yet we also see that we are all equally the same in this world, unlike lots of the population of the “boomers” and “generation X”, though not all are like this!
Suicide prevention campaigns to let people know they are always wanted, and schools adopting “no bullying” policies encouraging kindness, are just a few examples of how our newer generations are pushing to create an accepting society. We also are aware of social issues, and are not afraid to use our freedom of speech, knowing well that you will probably most definitely get hated on for it. It shows our strive to make a difference in the world today.
Of course, every generation has countless flaws and I can’t speak for every single person in the universe, but that’s okay. Different views and opinions are healthy so everyone isn’t the same person. Our world will never be perfect, but I think it’s cool that people are beginning to accept others for who they are after realizing their differences do not affect us as individuals. It’s a huge step in the right direction.
Sure, the olden days are pretty cool to look back on and reminisce. But remember, maybe our generation isn’t so bad after all. With what we continue to change and accomplish, we could go pretty far.
