On Oct. 11, New Zealand officials proposed placing a tax on the methane produced when cows burp. This is part of a campaign to lower methane emissions by 47% before 2050. While this move is much to the dismay of farmers, officials claim the profits will be recouped by farmers labeling their products as “Climate Friendly”.

This scenario illustrates the trials of reversing greenhouse gas production. To reverse climate change governments are having to resort to threatening profit due to lack of voluntary cooperation. While the proposal has not gone over well, the climate crisis has resulted in droughts in New Zealand crippling the agricultural economy making the situation more complex.
