For the homecoming theme this year, StuCo chose Broncos in Paradise. They chose this because they believed it had the best ideas for spirit days and was the most planned out theme.
Personally, I think the theme doesn’t fit the time of year. I understand that it may have been the best idea for the spirit days, but it still feels out of place and unoriginal.
After hearing what other SPUB staff members think, it made me rethink some of my original opinions. Some members of StuCo explained how students don’t realize that coming up with a homecoming theme is not as easy as they may think.
“StuCo has to keep in mind the criteria the theme must meet and if a theme does not meet one, then it simply can’t be done,” Brynna Pierson, StuCo president, yearbook editor in chief, 12, said.
This theme fits the criteria and the spirit days are easily accessible for students to take part in which is something that many don’t take into consideration.
Some also explained that homecoming doesn’t meet their expectations and often ends up being disappointing anyway.
“The spirit week leading up to it is fun the dress shopping, the proposals, the plans,” Macey Chaulk, 11, said. “Everyone is excited for homecoming, typically from the beginning of September to the day of, but when they actually dress up and arrive in the gym, there’s like two decorations and a DJ who might as well be playing Kidz-Bop.”
The fall homecoming dance is right after the football game which means many students miss out on the opportunity to partake in the activities prior to the dance that make homecoming fun.
Students rarely follow the homecoming themes anyway. They’re mainly just set in place for spirit days and the decorations in the concourse and at the dance.
While I don’t love the theme, I’m also a part of the students who don’t follow the theme, so either way, it won’t affect me that much. I think that coming up with a theme that fits the criteria and will make everyone happy is harder than people realize, and I think students should give StuCo members some grace.
