A woman was captured at 11 years old by the Islamic State group in Iraq; after a decade of captivity, the woman has finally been released. The Yazidis are a religious minority group who reside primarily in Iraq and Syria. In 2014, the Islamic State group overran many Yazidi communities massacring thousands of men as well as capturing and enslaving women and young girls. The women was identified as Fawzia Amin Sido, a 21-year-old, who had been traumatized by her time in captivity and represents the need for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The war between Palestine groups like Hamas and Israeli prevents people like Sido from being freed and returning to a safe place in their country. Due to the security situation in Gaza, several Israeli attempts to rescue her over the course of four months failed. Israeli military states that the young women’s captors have been killed during the Israeli-Palestine conflict, most likely as a result of a airstrike.
