Art is defined as the ‘expression or application of human creative skill and imagination’ as per the Oxford dictionary. This definition couldn’t be more true according to Blake Bunker, 12.
“Art is a way to express creativity and create something that other people are able to look at and bring inspiration from. Being able to bring across ideas in different creative ways is why art is important.”
Bunker experiments with art through classes offered by the high school. In project management, the advanced graphic design class, they are able to work with teachers and organizations around the school to create designs and products.
“Graphic design is fun because I get to use different tools like photoshop and illustrator to make something. I like the project management side of things where I’m able to get projects from people around the school and fit their needs,” Bunker said.
While they do enjoy the art classes, Bunker plans to go into animation as a career. The high school does not offer class selections in this category.
“There’s some graphic design stuff that I will use, but there’s not a lot of classes offered for animation specifically. So, being [knowledgeable] in various different ways is important to me. I do a lot of stuff outside of school like passion projects. I’ve just been working on being skilled in all of the different mediums.”
Through working on different projects and living an art-involved life, Bunker has gained insight on what art means to them.
“I love being able to create something and work on something that lets me learn different things about people and then get to have something I’m proud of at the end. I like the freedom I have with art. I’m not constrained to specific ideas,” Bunker said. “Art has taught me a lot about work ethic and even if I don’t feel like doing something I’ve learned to have the discipline to sit down and get into the mindset to do it.”
