The Grammys are a must-watch event for many people, and year after year, people take to social media in the days after to cheer on their favorite artists, or rant about how a certain artist was snubbed or didn’t deserve the award they got. This year was no different, but the amount of incredible music that was released by outstanding artists was vast compared to past years. The 2025 Grammys are the most competitive I’ve seen in recent memory.
While reading the staff’s written opinions about how they felt the Grammy’s went this year, two groups of common opinions emerged. One was a fiery set of frustrations about Beyoncé’s Country Carter winning Album of the Year, and the other was an acknowledgment of the sheer amount of incredible art up for awards at this year’s Grammys; however, the frustrated group far outnumbered the more amiable group.
Before explaining my opinions on the big winners this year, I feel that the Grammys this year was a step in the right direction. The Grammys have historically not granted flowers to those deserving, especially to marginalized groups like black artists. Moreover, the Grammys are not a popularity contest. At all. They have a voting committee for a reason, and that is why awards like Album of the Year and Song of the Year are not based on streaming numbers.
The Grammys came under a lot of fire after awarding Beyoncé Album of the Year for her eighth studio album Cowboy Carter, and my stance on the matter is this: Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter is 100 percent deserving of Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year. That does not mean that albums nominated for the same award, like Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, are not also incredible pieces of art that deserve awards. In terms of other awards, I am delighted that Chappell Roan was awarded Artist of the Year, and I’m ecstatic that Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal won Rap Album of the Year. Both artists have had major years in terms of their careers, and they both deserve recognition for it. Lastly, Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us winning both Song of the Year and Record of the Year, awards I cannot find much difference between, leaves me happy and relieved that they were not snubbed again like their loss for the nomination of To Pimp a Butterfly for Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammys.
In ultimatum, every artist that is nominated for an award at the Grammys has already won an incredible honor, and the public outrage at the winners of awards is fueled by pure bias over personal taste and isn’t based on artistry, which is how the Grammys should award their nominees.
