The Super Bowl is an event that has exceeded the national audience and is viewed worldwide. It has become especially significant to people around the Kansas and Missouri area since the Chiefs have been in the Super Bowl for the last three consecutive years.
SPUB staff members were fairly split on whether they liked football, didn’t, or just didn’t care. Despite their thoughts on football, almost everyone watched the halftime show.
“Despite the Chiefs being my hometown team, I have never cared about football in the slightest,” said Danny Heinen, 11. “I just don’t have the heart for it, but I understand how people can care about it. The thing I do have stakes in is the halftime performance, as it’s a public concert where I can view my favorite artists.”
Many SPUBers agreed that the halftime performance is their favorite part of the game and the main reason why they watch the Super Bowl.
One person in particular, Madi Brown, 11, believes the Super Bowl in and of itself is usually disappointing for viewers.
“I don’t know if this is because the Chiefs have been in the Super Bowl for the last few years so there has been extra hype, but everyone has high expectations for the game, halftime performance, and commercials, and they never seem to live up to the hype,” said Brown.
Some staff members just don’t like football in general.
“I am a football hater until I die, unfortunately,” said Ava Rushing, 12. “It’s boring, and no matter how much I try to get myself to sit down, watch the game, and at least tolerate it, I cannot. I didn’t watch the Super Bowl because I truly have no interest in the game itself. I think that the community that football has helped to create across Kansas City is great, but I have no interest in the sport itself.”
Whether people like football, don’t like football, liked the halftime show, or find it underwhelming, the Super Bowl is an event that continues to create moments of connection and excitement for people across Kansas City, the nation, and the world.
