During a press conference announcing new tariffs on the United States, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, condemned President Donald Trump’s comments about suggesting Canada should become the U.S.’s 51st state.
“This is much more than about our economy. It is about the future of our country,” Joly stated during the press conference, “Canadian sovereignty and identity are nonnegotiable. Canadians have had enough, and we are a strong country.”
Yesterday, Trump referred to the U.S.-Canada border as an “artificial line of separation.” Trump said, in the Truth Social Post, “The only thing that makes sense is for Canada is to become our cherished Fifty First State.” Tomorrow, two Canadian ministers and Ontario Premier, Doug Ford,l will head to D.C. to debate tariffs with Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, a topic the ministers announced today at a press conference.
