On Tuesday, April 22, President Donald Trump was pressed by the media regarding his plans to incentivise giving birth in the United States. Trump’s administration proposed the idea of giving $5,000 to women who give birth, and increasing the child tax credit They have also discussed funding efforts to increase education for women regarding their menstrual cycles, with the goal being for women to better understand when they are ovulating. Trump has praised these ideas and is in strong support of having a “baby boom.”
The CDC reports that the birth rate is at the lowest ever recorded, and it is down three percent from 2022. The dropping birth rates have been a trend seen worldwide as well. Trump is not the only world leader who is concerned and considering incentivising birth. South Korea, Japan, China, France, and many other countries have proposed “baby bonuses.” Some arguments against Trump’s ideas regard fear of government control regarding individual’s reproduction and hormonal/menstrual cycles.
