On April 27, Graham Hoffman, a member of the Kansas City Fire Department, was stabbed while responding to a medical emergency. Hoffman was transporting a patient to Saint Luke’s from north Kansas City when the patient stabbed him. Despite the efforts of medical teams at a nearby hospital, Hoffman would later die from his injuries.
In recent years, injuries and deaths of first responders have increased nationwide, making their jobs more dangerous than ever. In an interview with KMBC, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas was quoted saying that the city will “figure out a way to make sure this doesn’t happen again”. Despite the city’s drive to improve safety for first responders, only small steps have been taken so far.
