On Wednesday Sept. 10, 2025, Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson announced he will retire after serving since 2014. Watson will remain in the position until a new commissioner is selected. During his time as commissioner, he worked on programs to help students improve reading skills and help schools provide better support for students.
Watson will retire after more than a decade in the role, in which he visited every school district in the state. Families, students, and teachers can follow who will take over as the next commissioner through the Kansas Board of Education.
