On Monday, Sept. 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Moscow will abide by the nuclear arms limit for another year after their agreement for nuclear arms reduction with the United States ends on Feb. 6, 2026. Putin stated that the ending of the 2010 New START Treaty would have unfortunate outcomes for global safety.
The 2010 New START Treaty states that each country has a limit of no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers. The implications of this treaty ensure that global nuclear war will not occur. It is extremely important to global safety that this treaty stays in place for as long as possible.
