Fall conferences start on Wednesday, Oct. 14, letting parents get perspectives of how their students are doing. Only seniors participate in student-led conferences in the fall, while underclassmen move from teacher to teacher to receive direct feedback.
Seniors have spent the past weeks in advisory preparing presentations that highlight their achievements, goals, and plans after graduation. These presentations allow them to discuss future opportunities such as college, trade school, and the workforce.
Underclassmen will use the day to meet with their teachers, talk about grades, and find places of improvement before the semester’s end. They will also take either the Pre-ACT, a practice ACT, or the PSAT. Seniors will focus on college visits and applications, applying for scholarships, and the FAFSA. Additionally, on Wednesday afternoon there will be a college and career fair where students can explore work options for their future.
Counselor Debra Woofter believes these conferences are important, allowing students to be in control of their learning. “It’s important for students to take charge and reflect on what they’ve learned,” Woofter said. “By leading the conferences, they get to show their parents what they’ve accomplished and what steps they’re taking toward their futures.”
