What If: Blocked Schedule

I would definitely be in favor of SHHS having blocked scheduling for many reasons. When we come into school, we know exactly what to expect. We have the same seven class periods everyday. The only variety we get are the two homeroom days a week. The only difference is we that we have lunch during a different period, and we have homeroom at the end of the day. In my opinion, it is very bland and unproductive to have our schedule set up this way. Everyday, we try to cram entire lessons, class assignments and projects into measly 45-50 minute long class periods. This results in less work time and more homework for students. If we had fewer classes per day that met for longer periods of time, we would have plenty of time to receive our lessons and to complete our homework and projects. This way, we would only have to visit a few classes every day, and our classes would be spread out throughout the school week. I think that a block schedule would boost morale and productivity, and it would make school seem more professional. When students go off to college, they can’t expect to meet with every teacher in every class everyday. They will have to grow accustomed to meeting once or twice a week for a few hours at a time. I think that with longer classes, students would be more productive, and they would actually use all of their time to get their work done. When I come into my classes everyday, I come into them knowing that I will have to finish things at home. Having every class every day of the week can become so hectic. With a block schedule, students could live with less stress than if they had everything on their plate all the time.
