Moving Up In The World

As the population of Spring Hill is growing, the lingering question is; when are we going to move up to 5A? Although technically SHHS has the amount of students required to become 5A that’s not exactly how it works. Each year the number of students in each school in Kansas is evaluated and a certain number of schools are determined 6A, 5A, 4A, etc. We have a more students than many other 4A schools but not enough to beat out the population of any 5A schools to move us up. So as of right now, we are stuck in the weird position of in between 4A and 5A. The estimated population increase for SHHS is by 2020 we are suppose to be over one thousand students. If this were to happen we would become a 5A school. So, what’s going to happen when or if we become 5A? The first thing that most people think of is the competition for sports will be greater. We will be moved into a different sports league so playing the schools like Louisburg, Paola, and Desoto etc. that we have been playing since middle school will change. Although it is hard to determine what schools will be in our league, they will be a tougher competition. Travelling distances for sports could also increase due to the fact that the 5A school around this area aren’t as close as the 4A schools. This could affect when sports teams will have to leave the school and that means student athletes might miss more school than they currently do. The competition would not only increase for sports but also for academic competitions such as debate and forensics, art shows, scholar’s bowl, SPUB, etc. Although it might seem like an upgrade for Spring Hill to move up to 5A, it might hurt us in the long run. As of right now, we definitely aren’t domination in the sports department and it could take a few years for us to adjust to competing to higher levels.
