Friday Feels: Passing Period Music

Picture this. It’s Friday morning. You’re ready for the weekend. You’re looking forward to listening to your favorite songs during the passing periods. But as soon as that bell rings, you are, yet again, flooded with that familiar feeling known as disappointment.

Listening to music during passing periods every Friday is a developing tradition and is something every student should be fond of. However, most students just wish they could choose the songs that were played. Oh wait, they can! Well, you might not realize it, but what we listen to on Fridays is up to you. That’s right, no more Star Wars, or Walmart Yodeling Boy tunes. Well, unless you’re a fan of that.

Jennifer Leaton, SHHS secretary who helps set up Friday music, said “Every year the StuCo executive board is in charge of providing the songs to me so that I can load them onto the bell server. They haven’t really made it public in the past that students can make suggestions. But, typically there is one individual on the StuCo board that’s in charge of it and kind of takes that on as their project, and I would say that students can email that student and make suggestions and recommendations.”

Although it’s not publicised well, you can make suggestions by emailing Majesta Dixon, 12, who is the executive on the StuCo board. However, you must ensure that your song choices are PG, have good quality and are less than five minutes long. It’s also a good idea to have a couple backups in case one of your songs is denied.

Everyone enjoys Friday music, but sometimes the playlists chosen aren’t student’s go-to jams. For example, Meredith Todd, 9, said her favorite song that has been played was “Meant to Be” by Florida Georgia Line. However, she wasn’t a huge fan of the Star Wars themed songs that were played on one particular Friday.

Leaton agreed as well saying, “We love the bell sounds just like everybody else. You see teachers dancing in the halls or going, ‘what’s that awful noise?’ or whatever, but somebody always loves it and it’s super fun.”

Overall, listening to music during Friday passing periods was a great idea implemented by Marc Williams, Head Principal, but it does have a few flaws that are going to be worked out by Leaton and the StuCo executive board. Additionally, the Friday bell songs will never please every student due to everyone’s unique taste in songs. SHHS is fortunate to be able to play music during Friday passing periods thanks to our amazing StuCo executive board, Leaton, Williams.

“I [love] how we get to choose the songs that we want to be played,” said Todd, “and it’s a fun thing I always look forward to on Fridays.”
