The Chilean President Sebastian Piñera has canceled the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation, APEC, summit in the week of Nov. 11 through Nov. 17 and the United Nations Summit planned to take place before the end of 2019.

“President @sebastianpinera, Chair of APEC Chile 2019, announced that APEC Leaders’ Week will not be held in Chile this year. The safety and welfare of Chile and our member economies are APEC’s utmost priority,” Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria (@Rebecca_APEC), said on twitter, reported NPR.

At one of the summits Trump and the leader of china were hoping to sign the first step of a trade deal. This deal would provide relief to american farmers and business battered by the trade war.

“As president, I have the duty to put the needs of Chileans first. That is why, sadly, we decided to cancel the APEC and COP summits to guarantee order and peace [and] focus on dialogue and #NuevaAgendaSocial in order to produce urgent solutions to the main demands,” Piñera tweeted, reported NPR.

Chile has been plagued with civil inequality and political unread for a while.

“As many as 1 million protesters took part in a peaceful march over the weekend, while smaller protests have turned violent, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency in several major cities,” Reported the Washington post.

The summits have not yet been rescheduled because Chile is still trying to settle the political unread and crisis in the streets.
