The mood of the show this year was more solemn than normal with the death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna happening only hours prior to the ceremony. In fact, many celebrities, such as Lizzo and The Jonas Brothers, declined all interviews prior to the red carpet after hearing of Bryant’s death. The show itself started out with host Alicia Keys giving a tribute to Bryant, and many performers either mentioned Kobe while singing, or had an object signifying him on stage, such as a jersey with his number.

There were many stand out performances of the night including Lizzo’s show opener, and Demi Lavato’s heartfelt performance of her song “Anyone”, which she had written only a few days prior to her overdose back in 2018. Arguably one of the most anticipated performances was Lil Nas X’s record breaking song Old Town Road. In the performance he had guests Billy Ray Cyrus, K-pop group, BTS, internet sensation Mason Ramsey and Diplo. Needless to say it was a crowd favorite, and was a very memorable performance.

As for the awards, “Bad Guy” singer Billie Eilish took home a Grammy in each of the four major categories: record of the year, song of the year, album of the year and best new artist. At the young of of 18, and nominated when she was only 17, Eilish is the youngest singer in Grammy history to walk away with album of the year. With the addition of all of her other awards, she definitely stole the show.

Overall, the show went smoothly, and the reviews were good for the most part. As the new decade begins, there will be many new artists and songs which may appear in the 63rd Grammys.
