At the Super Bowl this past Sunday, the halftime show consisted of a performance by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, the two most popular Latina artists. While usually the halftime shows are only a source of entertainment, J-Lo and Shakira put a few hidden messages into their performance that some may have not caught. Lopez’s daughter sang “Born in the USA,’ while her along with other children emerged from what seemed to be cages. This was getting the message across for people to vote, mindful that American authorities separate migrant children from their parents at the border.

There are several ways the performance may be dissected, but overall most were satisfied by the Latina theme that got to shine through. Shakira posted a video thanking Colombia for “the mapalé, the champeta, the salsa and the Afro-Caribbean rhythms” dances that she performed on Sunday, that allowed her to give the performance of her dreams. Before the performance, Lopez said she wanted to bring her daughters with her on stage to show them they have a voice, and can show who they are.
