Boys Basketball

On March 3, the Broncos played their sub-state game  against the Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds in a close game, but lost. 

“I feel like I could have gotten better. I mean, I was disappointed in the outcome. I didn’t feel like we played our best game. I thought our effort was really good. We just didn’t make enough shots,” said Wes Book, varsity boys head coach.

 “Then for us to be able to win especially in the postseason, it gets good teams. You had to make shots, and that puts a lot of pressure on you. But I looked at it today; we were 6 for 29 from the three-point line [and] went 2 and 7 from the free-throw line, and that’s not going to win you very many games.”

The Broncos weren’t doing too hot in the first half of the season, but started cleaning it up in the second half.

“I thought  [the season] went pretty good. There was a lot of adversity throughout the season. We kind of just all came together towards the end,” said Connor Zorn, 12. “I think those last three games Eudora, Ottawa, and Bonner Springs, really showed how hard we work throughout the season and, you know, it just capped off of what all we went through to come together and win some games.” 

Girls Basketball

The day after the boys, March 4, the Lady Broncos took on the DeSoto Eagles in another close sub-state game and lost. 

“Well, obviously we were disappointed in that we lost that first game and definitely just the way it went. The girls had a game plan. They executed the game plan and played really well, for 28 out of the 32 minutes, but unfortunately those last four minutes we struggled to get a shot to fall down,” Clay Frigon, varsity girls head Coach, said.

Despite the girl’s game plan they were unable to keep the Eagles at bay.

“We just couldn’t keep them off the free throw line. I don’t think I’ve ever had it where we lost the game where we held an opponent and won a two point field goal in the fourth quarter, but they made 20 free throws. So yeah, that was definitely something that didn’t go in our favor as far as the free throw line.”

The Eagles made a lot of good plays and free throws. The lady Broncos’ season, overall, wasn’t the best record-wise, but all of the girls did get better.

“I think that we played really well all season. We had our ups and downs, obviously. And I think that we peaked at exactly the right time. Our best game we probably played all year was our sub-state game,” Avery Anderson, 12, said.
