Settlement Reached in Breonna Taylor Lawsuit
The city of Louisville, Ky. agreed to pay $12 million to the family of Breonna Taylor and to reform police practices as part of a settlement months after the death of Taylor by police. The lawsuit was filed by Taylor’s mom in April, accusing police of using flawed information when a “no knock” warrant was obtained to enter the apartment Taylor and her boyfriend shared in order to execute a search warrant for drugs. The altercation ended violently when Taylor was shot several times by police. The officers said they returned fire to her boyfriend who was startled by their entrance and proceeded to shoot at them. No drugs were found at the home. Taylor’s death sparked months of protests in both Louisville and nationwide calling for the officers to be charged. However, family members of Taylor say that more must be done to make things right. Family members and others believe that the price that was settled on was too low for the unjust loss of Taylor’s life.
For months protests across the country have called for justice regarding wrongful deaths at the hands of police officers. Many celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and LeBron James have called for the police officers who killed Taylor to be charged. This settlement is a huge step forward for police reform and justice. It is the hope of many that police practices are improved in order to stop a tragedy like this from occurring again.
