China has warned Taiwan that furthering their move for independence will result in war. China has recently been stepping up military activity near the pacific island, including flying warplanes over Taiwan. After the increasing military actions of China and the threats of war, U.S. president Joe Biden has backed the Taiwanese movement for independence.

Since the Chinese civil war in 1949, Taiwan and China have had separate governments. Beijing has long tried to limit Taiwan’s international activities and both have strived for influence over the Pacific region. Tensions between China and Taiwan have been rising in recent years and China recently has been trying to take the island back by force. Even though Taiwan is officially recognized by a few nations, its democratic government has strong commercial and informal links with many countries.
