Ralph Yarl Shooting

In Kansas City, MO, a black teenager was shot after mistakenly going to the wrong home to pick up his younger brothers from a friend’s house. Andrew Lester, 84, surrendered himself at the Clay County Detention Center, a whole day after being charged with only first-degree assault and armed criminal action. There were some civil rights leaders who had urged a hate crime towards the charge against Andrew Lester. If charging Lester with a hate crime, this would’ve potentially meant a shorter sentence if he is convicted.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. on Thursday. Police Chief, Stacey Graves, said Ralph Yarl’s parents asked him to pick up his twin brothers on 115th Terrace, but he had mistakenly gone to 115th Street. When Yarl had rung the doorbell, Lester came to the door and shot Yarl in the forehead then again in his forearm. James Lynch, the neighbor, found Yarl covered in blood. Lynch checked Yarl’s pulse and another neighbor had come out to help stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived later on the scene. By Tuesday morning there was a GoFundMe page that was set up for Yarl and there have been over 77,000 donations. The amount of money raised for Yarl was around 2.9 million dollars.
