Many people don’t enjoy physical education as a class because they feel excluded, or maybe they just aren’t as competitive as others. Unified Physical Education is a class in which students can express their love for sports and activities without feeling like they are being judged or brought down.
“Unified P.E. is where special needs kids get to intermix with general education students. We break the sport down that we play, we learn about the skills and by the end of the unit we play some games involving that sport.” Jamie Oshel, head coach, said.
This type of physical education class brings kids together and creates friendships that would not normally be formed. All participants in Unified P.E. make sure that everyone is included in all activities that they do.
“I feel really excited coming to my P.E. class everyday, where all my friends are and the people that support me are in there as well.” Nick Hansen,12, said.
Sometimes it can be a little more difficult for some students to try certain activities compared to others, but pushing them to do their best is always the goal.
“The general education students learn how to work with the special needs kids and keep a calm and positive attitude at all times,” Oshel said.
Some general education students believe this is beneficial for having more patience and better communication skills. Many are glad that it’s instituted at the high school.
