This year Abbey Jones, head culinary teacher, is new to the school. Although this is not their first year teaching, it’s their first year at the high school.
“I like all the culinary classes and this is my first time teaching high school. I have only [taught] part time high school and part time middle school. At the middle school I had to do some sewing with the sixth graders and it’s not my favorite thing to teach, so I have really enjoyed doing all the cooking this year [with the high schoolers]. it’s a lot higher than I’m used to. I’m pretty experienced with that but on the culinary side there’s some higher level things I’m gonna have to learn myself.” Jones said.
This position comes with a lot of responsibilities and expectations. This semester, they have six different classes which means none of their classes are repeating; this alone is a struggle.
“In culinary it’s a struggle [to have six different classes], it’s a lot of work. So far we have missed five days into the second semester, so I haven’t gotten the flow down yet but I will.” They say.
There are some changes you have to make. Moving from a big district like Olathe to a smaller one, like Spring Hill, there are lots of different things.
“There are a lot of changes, little things that you don’t think about. Just even getting a printer set up [or] adjusting to a new email, there’s a lot of stuff, little things that change going from district to district.”
Although there are a lot of things to adjust to and get used to, Jones has made it work.
