On March 20, a Johnson County Judge sentenced 19-year-old Fernando Reyes-Lara to 33 years in prison on multiple charges. Shawnee police responded to a call on Nov. 30, 2022 to find 25-year-old Jarod Rogers to be fatally shot. Reyes-Lara was charged with second degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.
Reyes-Lara was 17-years-old at the time of murder. This case, and many cases like it, can take an upwards of 10 years for the alleged criminals to be charged. When these cases take so long to go through the justice system, closure and healing is often very hard for the victims’ families.
