Modern streaming technology has inspired video gamers to livestream their fun across the world on platforms like Twitch and YouTube. In December, Gus Oppeau, 11, also known by his Twitch handle s_Wayve, hosted a 16-hour-long livestream event to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

“I figured if I was willing to put in the time, I would be able to raise more money for charity and I wanted to raise as much as I possibly could … It was an ongoing thing; but the 16 hours was to just make a huge event for it, for something I felt like ‘yeah this is a good use of my time, to do that,’ and I wanted to make the charity thing the forefront of at least one stream,” said Oppeau.

The charity started with a streaming group called 8BC, which Oppeau is a member of. They held multiple streams that raised money for St. Jude’s. Oppeau used this opportunity to make a large event that skyrocketed the total raised.

“That was my first stream that I did for charity and I think we raised a hundred dollars on that stream. Then I took it upon myself, I went to the owners of the community and asked if I could advertise my charity stream that I was thinking of doing, it was a 16 hour stream. I sat down and streamed for 16 hours for charity. They were all on board and so we got that set up with the community; and that’s where that was born. That night we went from 100 dollars to I think 960 dollars, and then the morning after the stream we hit 1000 raised.”

Oppeau’s livestream event, with the support of his community, raised over $1000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Oppeau is already looking to the future.

“Coming up sometime soon, I don’t know when…I’m going to be raising money for the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation for [a] 24 hour stream that’s coming up. We have a couple things planned, we are going to build some Legos on stream, because that was another goal for the 16 hour livestream, we have a bunch of things planned but that is in the works.” Oppeau took a fun pastime and found a way to raise money for charity.
