China Launches Space Station Module

China recently launched its first of 11 modules that will slowly create a new space station (photo courtesy AP News).

On April 29, Chia launched the main module of its first permanent space station. The Tianhe, or “Heavenly Harmony,” was the first of 11 pieces to be launched to construct the new station. China expects the supply and crew to be set and launched by the end of 2022.

This station would be the one of only two stations orbiting the Earth (the other being the International Space Station). China plans to use this as a first step to launch other missions, including sending a rover to Mars. This plan, following N.A.S.A’s rover landing on Mars recently, mirrors a rivalry found during the Space Race in 1955.
