20-year-old Brook Cheuvront was reported missing on Sept. 21 after their tracking app stopped updating their location. Cheuvront was hiking on South Africa’s Table mountain when her location was lost. A search party was launched to locate Cheuvront until late that night. Their body was found and recovered on Sept. 23.
If it were not for Cheuvront’s location app, they may have been missing for much longer before their body was discovered. Most outdoor societes recommend hiking in groups of two or more. Planning ahead for trips like these are incredibly important. Sharing one’s location and trip plans with others can be the difference between life and death.
