On Sunday, Jan. 11, beach-goers discovered five decapitated heads along the beaches of Puerto López, Ecuador. Puerto López has been subject to gang violence over the last few decades, and the most recent target of their violence is fishermen. Alongside the decapitated heads, there were signs threatening the fishermen using ports along the Pacific Ocean.
Pacific ports, like that in Puerto López, are some of the most popular for smuggling cocaine into the United States and a number of European countries. With Ecuador being sandwiched between two of the highest cocaine producing countries, Colombia and Peru, it has become increasingly popular for illegal drug trade, impacting countries around the world.
