Amidst reports of U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) considering opening a mass detention facility in south Kansas City, Mo., the Kansas City Council passed an ordinance on Thursday, Jan. 15 enacting a five-year moratorium on permits or other approvals necessary for non-municipal detention centers within city limits.
“Our priority is building businesses, homes, and schools that strengthen and grow our community,” said Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas in a statement provided by the KC Star. Several other Kansas City officials have condemned a proposal to move the planned facility to just outside Grandview city limits. In a time of controversy and violence involved the actions of ICE, it is important to be informed of local developments by the organization.
