On Jan. 18, a crash occurred near Adamuz, Spain when a high-speed train derailed. This caused the train to head into the path of an oncoming train, causing that train to derail as well. There continues to be an investigation into how the train crashed and a search for victims. As of Jan. 20, there have been 41 deaths, 39 hospitalizations, and 120 total injuries confirmed.
Investigators have continued to study the scene to discover why the accident occurred. So far, they have found a broken joint on the track, likely causing a gap to form and widen as more trains passed over it. Many causes for the accident have been debated, but authorities have stressed that it could take weeks or longer for them to discover the true reason.
