News Brief 1/13-1/19

A “dangerous” ice storm that never rolled around left Spring Hill High School closed on Jan. 13th. All events for that evening, including the basketball games out in Baldwin, were then cancelled. This gave the students a four day weekend, as school was also out of session Monday the 16th in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The week proved to be a busy one in sports though, as both the boys’ varsity and JV, plus the girl’s JV basketball teams had tournaments while the remaining teams had a busy week of practices.

Both the Boys and Girls JVs went out to a tournament in Bonner Springs Monday the 16th and Wednesday the 18th. The girls managed to take home a third place title as the boys finished in 4th. The Varsity boys spent the week competing in the annual Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament, defeating Osawatomie on Tuesday the 17th with a final score of 55-43 and suffering a close loss Thursday the 19th with a final score of 77-62.

Wednesday, the student publications staff headed over to the middle school and helped out the 8th grade yearbook group with improving their yearbook spreads and photography skills. Eleven FFA students attended Slice of Ag in Overland Park while an additional four attended a public speaking event in Lawrence.

Also on Thursday, the girls’ basketball teams went out to Louisburg. While there, the freshman team took home a win with a final score of 31-22. The JV girls earned the same fate with a final score of 44-33. Then to wrap up the evening for the girls, the varsity team suffered a loss to Louisburg 49-61. The wrestling team started out their weekend long tournament on Thursday out in Hays. They were able to defeat Phillipsburg 39-31, but suffered a loss to Hays 30-48. The play was announced during homeroom as well, and audition sign ups began for “Arsenic and Old Lace”.

The weekend will hold the remainder of the Wrestling tournament at Hays as well as the rescheduled Debate state tournament.
