Married Young

The average day of a 15-year-old may consist of studying for their math test, talking with friends, sleeping, or in some cases, planning your wedding with your 21 year old boyfriend. That is what happened with Brittany Koerselman; she was a seven month pregnant sophomore who lived in Iowa. She and her boyfriend, Jeremie Rook, drove to Missouri to get married, but not because they were in love. In Iowa, when a 21-year-old has sex with a 15-year-old it is considered to be statutory rape. The only way to keep Rook from going to jail was for the two to get married. The only place that they could get married, with Koerselman being so young, was to drive to Missouri. Missouri is the only state where a 15 year old can get married with only one parent’s signature, which is just what they did in 2014. Brittany now says that she never wanted to get married ever, but that was the only way to save Rook from going to prison. They got divorced when Koerselman was 18 years old and she was taking care of her four-year-old by herself. Now 19, Koerselman and Rook have reconciled and are planning on getting remarried this summer. She even said that Rook and her have gotten back together and split up seven different times before they decided to get married again. About 1,000 other kids at Koerselman’s young age have gotten married in Missouri since 1999. Many people think that Missouri needs stricter laws about how young someone can be when they get married, which is what Missouri did. Since they were getting hate from people wanting them to change their law, they voted to change the age limit from 14 to 17.
