An expansive federal report on guns and crime shows that the time between the legal purchase of a gun and when it is found from a crime scene is shrinking. The report also shows a spike in the use of conversion devices, which can make a semiautomatic gun fire like a machine gun, and a growing seizure of hard-to-trace, privately made firearms, called ghost guns.

The report comes after the recent rise in concern over gun violence. Much of the data from these government reports isn’t made widely available, but in response to recent mass shootings, the report aimed to assist police and policy makers in reducing gun violence.
